i'm writing this short guide based on my own experience with fansigns. i've applied for 3 fansigns so far (both individual and group) and gotten into all 3, so i think i'm very lucky in this aspect. hence i hope that i can share tips that will help those who are thinking of applying for fansigns.

who should apply?
the idea of talking to your bias definitely sounds appealing, but do remember that ultimately fansigns are a gamble. more often than not, you will fail. hence, my recommendation is only to try if you are able to deal with not getting in. also, please only try within your financial means. it's a hefty sum of money to blow at once, so please consider carefully before you decide to apply!

how to apply?
keep an eye out for announcements made on the group's official accounts. usually, you simply have to go to the organising website and buy albums. for individual fansigns, you can pick members and have a 1-2 min conversation with them, and for group fansigns, you usually get 1 minute with each member.

how many albums to buy?
short answer: there's no recommended number.
long answer: it depends on a lot of factors. i will be listing them down below, and based on these factors you can decide for yourself how many you want to buy for a good shot at winning.

1. financial means: please only buy an amount that you can afford and are comfortable with. personally, i buy an amount that i'm comfortable with losing assuming that i don't win, but manage to sell off most of the albums.
2. group/member: the number of albums to buy varies greatly among groups and members. more popular members = more albums. for this, it pays to ask people who've previously joined fansigns for the same group/member.
3. sites: different sites have different foreigner cuts. some sites might be more foreigner-friendly while some might only have very few slots for foreigners. hence it pays off to do your own research on fansigns done previously for other groups to have a rough idea of what the foreigner cut is like. some sites e.g. ktown4u are also bigger and will naturally have more people applying, so you might want to consider trying on a site that is less well-known.
4. special pcs: usually sites with special pcs require more albums to win than sites without. many people open gos for the pcs and that brings up the average number of albums ordered, but special pcs also makes it easier/cheaper for you to open your own go.
5. order: i have a theory that the earliest and latest fansigns are the least competitive. this is because earlier on, a lot of fans would have already spent a lot of money preordering albums, or they might be waiting to see how the first few rounds of fansigns go before trying. when it's nearing the end, especially for groups that hold a lot of fansigns, most fans would have already tried out for them, so the last few fansigns would probably have less people trying.

i hope this short guide is helpful! please feel free to dm me if you want more specific answers that i haven't addressed here :)
